A self-help grant from the United States Embassy in Kiglai, Rwanda is helping to provide the 8,000 residents of Cyimanzovu with access to clean drinking water.

The Ambassador’s self-help program invests in small-scale and sustainable community based initiatives that quickly improve the quality of life.  Manna is working with the community to build a water treatment system in this northwest Rwanda town using locally available materials that will link to an existing water distribution pipeline serving schools, a military camp, a hospital and a cooperative of women living with HIV/AIDS, as well as the community at large.

Improved Health

Clean water and the resulting improved sanitation will lessen exposure to diarrheal diseases, especially for residents with compromised immune systems. Community members will spend less time hindered by illness and have more time to devote to school and work. This initiative will also decrease demand for firewood, which is typically used to boil and sanitize water, thereby protecting carbon-rich forests.

The United States Embassy Kigali is funding 19 different projects including an investment in glass bead jewelry production, mushroom and poultry farming, and the water purification system being installed by Manna.
